Barnstormer | Disney World
For many children, the first roller coaster they experience is the Barnstormer at Walt Disney World.
This ride, although short and quick, is a favorite of small children everywhere. Located in the Magic Kingdom, it’s a ride we highly recommend if you have children. But even though it’s short, wait times can get high and you can spend a long time waiting on a very short ride. Today we’ll give a brief overview of this ride, and also give you some tips on how to stay out of long lines when riding the Barnstormer.
The Barnstormer took it’s name from the now-closed Opryland in Nashville, Tennessee. Originally, the title was The Barnstormer at Goofy’s Wiseacre Farm. The ride was located in Toontown and opened in 1996. For 15 years, this ride was a favorite of many young children. In 2011, it closed down and was re-named The Barnstormer featuring the Great Goofini when it re-opened a year later in 2012. This ride has now found it’s permanent home next to the Dumbo attraction in the Circus area of New Fantasyland.
Barnstormer — The Ride
The junior roller coaster is a very quick ride, lasting only 1 minute. However, for a small roller coaster, it feels quite fast. The ride gets up to 25 mph, which isn’t too shabby for a little ride. But the ride is designed in a way to be very safe for small children, so you don’t need to worry about them. The fast, short ride is almost never enough for your kids, though, as they want to do it again and again! So it’s obviously not a thrill ride, but it’s thrilling for the little ones!
How to Fit the Barnstormer into Your Day
Like many other Fantasyland attractions, the Barnstormer can get VERY crowded during the afternoon hours, when this portion of the park becomes a madhouse. Knowing how to attack this ride can save you a lot of time.
There are two ways to ride this one:
1. Early in the morning as part of your Fantasyland Blitz. Arrive at the park 30 minutes ahead of time, and try and knock out all of Fantasyland by 10:30. Due to the short nature of the ride, you can be on and off the Barnstormer in less than 5 minutes. However, it is located at the very back portion of Fantasyland. We recommend hitting Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh, Dumbo and then riding the Barnstormer. That rotation can be done in 40 minutes, and you might be able to squeeze in the Barnstormer twice if your kids demand it!
2. Little kids don’t usually stay as late, and this ride isn’t designed for teenagers and adults. This means the hour before closing can be a great time to attack the Barnstormer.
3. While everyone else is riding Space Mountain. If you have a few small children that can’t ride Space Mountain, take them down the back path to the Barnstormer while the bigger kids are riding Space Mountain. Even if you have to stay in line for 20 minutes, it will make your small children happier than waiting out in the sun!
