Despite the fact that Walt Disney World is the most popular theme park in the entire world, there are still millions of people who have never been and aren’t sure what all the fuss is about. Our web series “Disney for Newbies” takes you through some of the basic questions that you will have when first trying to decide if Disney World is for your family. Today we’ll start REALLY basic! Where is Disney World?
Well, officially, Walt Disney World isn’t in Orlando, it’s in Lake Buena Vista, FL, which sits about 21 miles outside of Orlando. However, the resort is not in the middle of cow pastures either, as the area surrounding Disney is full of hotels, restaurants, retail shops and communities.
Important Things to Know about the Orlando area
First of all, Orlando is a very hot and humid locale. Therefore, Disney World is going to be a hot place to visit for much of the year. From March to early November, hot days are always a possibility. When planning a trip, you’ll need to make sure that you pack for the heat, and plan breaks during the heat of the day. The great thing about Disney World, however, is that while it’s hot, the air conditioners are amazing. They spend a lot of money to keep you cool when you head inside!
Second, thunderstorms can arrive quickly in the humidity of Florida. Be prepared for the storms by purchasing panchos or other equipment that can keep you dry when the rain comes!
Are you considering flying to Disney?
Orlando is a great destination, and due to the popularity of Disney and nearby Universal, the Orlando Airport has many great deals you can take advantage of. One of the unique things Disney can do is pick you up from the airport, bring you straight to your Disney resort, and bus you around the Disney resort the entire time you are there! All the transportation is free!
Other things to do in the Orlando area
Orlando is also home to Universal Studios, another very popular theme park resort. While I personally am not a huge Universal fan, there are many who enjoy doing a little bit of everything! Orlando also has great outlet malls for those who enjoy shopping, and the beach is just a short drive away as well! The point is that even if you decide not to make your Disney the sole focal point of your vacation, you can still have a blast in the Orlando area!
