Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Have you had a chance to ride the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train yet?  In 2014, this ride opened to thrilling reviews and long lines!  What exactly is this ride like?  How long are the lines for this ride?  We’ll answer some of these questions in our article and we’ll review the new Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Without question, our initial feelings are that this ride will be one of the most popular rides in the Magic Kingdom for a long time to come. This article will discuss the ride, some history on how the ride came about, and finally, we will give you some tips on how to ride Mine Train, without waiting in line for 60+ minutes.

Magic Kingdom Rides

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

When New Fantasyland was announced, the Mine Train was the headliner. After all, the Dumbo ride is basically unchanged, and the Little Mermaid ride, while fun, is still a kids ride. With a 38″ height restriction, the Mine Train is a roller coaster that your small children can enjoy, and that you’ll find fun too!

From a thrill perspective, its not quite as scary as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.  But the level of detail in this ride is quite amazing.  The queue is filled with interactive games and activities.  First, there is a video screen where you push gems into mine carts.  Next there is an activity in which you put your hand under sensors and water comes out in different colors.  Sound accompanies the water, which is a pretty neat experience.  But quickly you’ll be whisked into the VAULT, where you’ll find 7 barrels.  Spin all 7 barrels at once and Snow White will appear in the middle!

Moving onto the ride.  The coaster itself is smooth and modern.  It rocks side to side a bit, which gives it a bit of a different feel.  But we were extremely impressed with how smooth the ride is.  It’s not jarring at all like Thunder Mountain sometimes is.  Overall it is a very fun roller coaster that is going to blow your small child away, especially if it’s their first roller coaster.

Inside the ride, there are two areas showcasing the world of Snow White.  In the first, as you go up a slow ramp, you’ll be met with the Seven Dwarfs heading off to work.  The familiar Hi-Ho song will play in the background.  Then as you come around the final turn, you’ll approach the Seven Dwarfs cottage where Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are dancing and having a great time.

Don’t forget to look for a surprise visitor just outside the far end of the house!

When is the Best Time for Riding the Mine Train at the Magic Kingdom?

This ride is already extremely popular. Anything new usually is. As a result, there are two ways that you should approach this ride.

Use a Fastpass Plus reservation.

Currently, they are selling out fast.  We had a large party, and I was only able to get a fastpass for ONE person.  Sure, it was opening day, but this ride will be packed consistently.

If you try to make a last minute visit, you probably won’t get a fastpass.  But if you are in your planning stages, you should be fine if you make sure and login 60 days ahead of time! This will be the hardest fastpass to get for the rest of 2014, and so you’ll need to be prepared. Our article on How to Make Fastpass Plus Reservations will give you all the information that you will need to make FP changes, or to make your initial reservations.

Arrive at Rope Drop and go to Mine Train immediately.

If you arrive 30 minutes before the ride opens, you should be able to ride the Mine Train with minimal wait. But when I say minimal, take this with a grain of salt.  We tried getting there 30 minutes early on opening day, and by the time we made it there, the wait was already 70 minutes!  During the summer months, if you are looking to walk on, you need to be at the gates an hour early!  Otherwise, expect to wait an hour.

We hate recommending long wait times, but if you want to ride this one, you basically are going to have to.  From park open to park close, we never saw wait times get under 60 minutes.  While it was opening day, it was also a Wednesday!  The weekends will be far worse.

There are basically 2 ways to avoid long lines for the rest of this summer:  Get there an hour early, or make the Mine Train your last stop right before the park closes.  If you can’t do either of those things, be prepared to wait!

While we hate waiting, likely you recall being a child and waiting hours at theme parks for rides.  I know that happened to me all the time.  Fortunately, much of the waiting area has fans and trees, and then as you get closer there are interactive activities to take your mind off the wait!

Overall, we loved the ride and give it a solid A.  The theming and the level of detail throughout the queue and the ride are amazing, blowing away anything I’ve seen from Disney.  They certainly are raising the bar.
